Preserving Efforts Volume 1

Article by Martina Long

Each issue we aim to give some exposure to an unsigned artist. In our launch issue, after much deliberation, our first "Unsigned Artist of the Month" is Panika.

Panika, a.k.a Rosie Burgess, is a Melbourne based electro-hip hopper who has spent the last year mac-top- DJing around country.

Her latest independant release, "Genetically Modified" has been gaining much support and respect in the Triple J Unearthed competion getting both Triple J air time and comments such as "Best Aussie Female Hip Hop artist this year!!!!!!" and "wicked, wicked, wicked bass line mate, LOVE YOUR WORK witty choppy lyrics and a catchy chorus awesome".

Hip hop has traditionally been reserved for 'the boys', with its rhyming bravado and tough street politics.

In America, there are plenty of hip hop divas who take their cues from Madonna's Material Girl, but because hip hop is very much underground in Australia, female MC's are still proving themselves on the mike.

So as a female hip hopper she is in the minority in a male dominated music genre, but it is obvious from this album that Panika is definitly on her way to joining other female Oz Hip Hop artists such as Maya Jupiter, MC Trey, Mother Tongues and Macromantics as a must on your track list.
